Executive coaching and consulting has reached critical mass - finally! As someone who's transitioned through always having to explain that I wasn't involved with sports, it's thrilling to see executive coaching, consulting and development becoming so mainstream.
There's also a misconception that coaching is a corporate substitute for therapy but nothing could be further from the truth. Good executive coaching is personal but it isn't for dysfunctions that should be handled by a psychologist. A personal executive coach is more like an Olympic coach than a personal coach.

No worthwhile executive management training program is only about managing. An executive is someone who holds higher responsibility than most to carry something out or to put things into effect - which certainly requires management skills. But executive leadership development is about far more than managing.
Good executive coaching companies make sure best practices are in place but they also know that the best practices are always evolving. The benefits of executive coaching are that it builds and leverages management practices with exectuvie leadership development.

A good executive coach doesn't self-identify as a trainer. The most effective executive leadership programs are broad and holistic - they include incorporating best practices but they also account for many other levels of leadership. Executive business coaching needs to happen at the bottom line in terms of the safety and viability of the company or organization but it also needs to happen at the top line of leading toward the greatest good.
Savvy executive coaching services know that the old profit-at-any-cost consciousness about leadership just doesn't cut it anymore. The role of "development executive" at the United Nations can mean something much different than it does in the private sector. As an outside consultant and executive coach leading values-driven leadership programs at the UN in New York for more than 3 years, it's fascinating to see how the different meanings play out.
There are UN members who are in charge of developing a country or region economically or politically. They implement executive training programs and executive mentoring while they balance political hot potatoes. They discover pretty quickly that even the best executive coaching courses can't deliver results if they only deal with one leg of the 3-legged UN stool, economics, while it disregards the other 2, human rights and security.
